How to Use the PDF Splitter
Extract custom page ranges in any order into one new PDF or burst a multi-page PDF into standalone single-page PDF files locally in your browser.
- 1
Upload an unencrypted PDF file
Click the upload area or drag and drop a `.pdf` document (up to 100 MB). The tool inspects the document locally and displays its total page count and valid 1-based page range (`1` to `N`).
- 2
Choose your split mode
Select either Extract Selected Pages (One PDF) to combine specific pages or ranges into a single new PDF file, or Split Every Page (Individual PDFs) to generate a separate 1-page PDF file for every page in the document.
- 3
Enter your page selection (when using Extract Selected Pages)
Type comma-separated 1-based page numbers or hyphenated ascending ranges—such as `1`, `1,3,5`, `1-4`, `1-3, 5, 8-10`, or reordered pages like `5,1,3`—or use the quick preset buttons (First Page, Last Page, All Pages, Odd Pages, Even Pages).
- 4
Generate and download your split PDF(s)
Click the action button to build your output locally. In Extract Selected Pages mode, download the single combined PDF; in Split Every Page mode, download any individual zero-padded page file (`page-001.pdf`, `page-002.pdf`, etc.).
Understanding Custom PDF Page Extraction vs. Single-Page Splitting
Large PDF documents often contain dozens of pages when you only need to share a single signed signature page, a specific chapter, or odd/even pages for duplex printing. The AllToolsFree PDF Splitter provides two distinct local workflows powered by `pdf-lib` without uploading your document to any server.
In Extract Selected Pages mode, the parser evaluates your comma-separated tokens in the exact sequence you write them. This means you can not only trim unwanted pages (such as `2-10`), but also reorder pages within a document (such as entering `3, 1, 2` to move page 3 to the front of the extracted PDF).
Common Practical Use Cases
- Extracting a single invoice, certificate, or signed signature page from a multi-page scan.
- Reordering out-of-sequence pages in a scanned PDF by specifying the desired page sequence (e.g., `2, 1, 3-10`).
- Separating odd pages (`1, 3, 5...`) and even pages (`2, 4, 6...`) using the one-click Odd Pages and Even Pages preset buttons for manual two-sided printing.
- Bursting a multi-page packet (up to 100 pages) into standalone 1-page PDF files (`document-page-001.pdf`, `document-page-002.pdf`, etc.).
Page Range Syntax Rules and Validation Behavior
Page numbering is strictly 1-based (`1` corresponds to the first page of your PDF, up to `totalPages`). You can combine individual page numbers and ascending hyphenated ranges separated by commas, such as `1-3, 5, 8-10`. Whitespace around commas is ignored.
To prevent accidental duplicate pages or ambiguous ranges, the validator checks every token before running `pdf-lib`: descending ranges like `5-2`, non-numeric tokens, page numbers below `1` or above `totalPages`, and repeated pages (such as `1-3, 2`) immediately display a specific error message explaining which token needs adjustment.
Helpful Tips to Avoid Common Mistakes
- Use the Odd Pages and Even Pages quick-select buttons below the range input to automatically populate alternating page numbers for your loaded document.
- If your PDF has more than 100 pages and you want to split all of them, use Extract Selected Pages in batches of up to 100 pages (for example, `1-100` first, then `101-200`).
- Remember that you can reorder pages in Extract Selected Pages mode simply by listing the page numbers in the new order you want (such as `4, 1-3`).
- Vector text, embedded fonts, and original page dimensions are preserved in all extracted and split PDF files.
PDF Splitter Frequently Asked Questions
Can I change the order of pages when extracting them into one PDF?
Yes. In Extract Selected Pages mode, pages are added to the new PDF in the exact sequence you type them. For example, typing 5, 1, 2-4 places page 5 first, followed by pages 1 through 4.
Why does the range input reject overlapping ranges like 1-3, 2-4?
To prevent accidental duplicate pages in your extracted PDF, each page number can appear only once in the range expression. Instead of 1-3, 2-4, enter 1-4.
What if my PDF has more than 100 pages and I want to use Split Every Page?
Generating more than 100 separate PDF Blobs at once can exhaust mobile browser memory. For PDFs over 100 pages, switch to Extract Selected Pages mode and extract up to 100 pages at a time (e.g., 1-100, then 101-150).
Does splitting a PDF degrade the quality of text or images inside the pages?
No. The PDF Splitter copies the native PDF page objects losslessly using pdf-lib without re-compressing images or rasterizing vector text.
