How to Merge PDF Files for Free Without Installing Software
Combine several PDF documents into one file, arrange their order, and save a clean copy using a browser-based tool.
Why merge PDF files?
Paperwork often arrives as separate files. A résumé, cover letter, certificates, invoices, or class notes may belong together. A PDF merger combines those documents into one file that is easier to organize and send.
Before you merge
Collect the PDF files and decide their final order. An application packet, for example, might place the cover letter first, followed by the résumé, certificates, and supporting documents. Check that each file opens correctly before starting.
The AllToolsFree merger accepts unencrypted PDF files. Each file must be no larger than 100 MB. You can add up to 25 files, with a combined input size of no more than 150 MB. Password-protected, damaged, or unsupported files may be rejected. Only work with documents you are authorized to access.
How to combine PDF files
- Open the free AllToolsFree PDF Merger.
- Select two or more PDF files from your device.
- Review the selected files and their order.
- Use the Up and Down controls beside each file to arrange the documents. The first file appears first in the merged PDF.
- Use Remove to delete a file from the list, or Clear All to empty the list.
- Select Merge PDFs. When processing finishes, use the download control to save the combined PDF.
- Open the downloaded file and check its page order before sharing it.
Choose a useful page order
Arrange documents in the order another person should read them. For schoolwork, that could mean a title page, the main work, references, and appendices. For invoices, arrange them by date or by the order requested by the recipient.
A merger combines whole documents. If you need to extract selected pages instead, use the PDF Splitter.
Do the original files change?
The merger creates a separate combined file for download. Keep your original documents until you have opened and checked the new PDF.
Privacy and device considerations
AllToolsFree's PDF tools are designed to process selected documents locally in your browser rather than upload them to an AllToolsFree processing server. Your browser and device still need enough available memory. Large or complex PDFs may take longer or exceed the practical limits of a phone or computer.
Local processing reduces the need to send documents to a remote processing server, but it does not protect files from someone who already has access to your device. For sensitive records, use a device you control and avoid public computers.
Common problems
- File rejected: Check that it is a valid, unencrypted PDF and is not damaged.
- Result is too large: Merging does not automatically compress images inside the documents.
- Wrong page order: Rearrange the source-file list and create a new output.
- Browser becomes slow: Try fewer or smaller files, close unused tabs, or use a device with more available memory.
- Download is missing: Check your browser's Downloads list and the device's download folder.
